Fox Hunting: There's No Sitting On The Fence

Journalist Annette J Beveridge shares her thoughts about fox hunting

by Annette J Beveridge

The Boxing Day hunt has been and gone for another year, but that doesn’t mean that foxes or other animals are safe. The very thought of fox hunting feels me with shame and more than a little anger. How can we continue to chase and kill foxes for sport?

Fox hunting has been ongoing for centuries, ‘it is a tradition’ or so the hunters cry, but so was hunting witches and burning them at the stake and we no longer do this.

Sadly, although illegal hunts continue with many hiding behind a smokescreen called trail hunting, there are just too many foxes being killed all the same. Other animals are also affected including deer, hares and even, pets.

I may be a journalist but I spend a lot of my time trying to protect nature. So there’s no prize for guessing which side of the fence I am on, in fact, there is no fence. With any luck, the UK Government is about to ban trail hunting but will that stop fox hunting for good? The jury is still out on that one.

Are you for or against fox hunting?

This is a question that divides communities and brings strong feelings to the fore so do settle back, put your feet up and watch the video.
